SUPPORT THE RESIDENTS OF LOMAS DEL POLEO
Imagine your community suddenly surrounded by barbed wire and patrolled by armed guards working for a group that claims to own the property you’ve lived on for 30 years.
Imagine fearing to leave your home unattended lest these guards bulldoze it down in your absence.
Imagine that the electric company came and removed the electricity, taking away
78 electric poles, 14 transformers and nearly five miles of wiring.
Imagine beating deaths and mysterious fires that kill children.
Imagine ongoing threats of injury and death.
Imagine your church bulldozed to the ground by thugs.
Imagine that no one in government, not the police, not local elected officials, or the courts do anything to stop the violence. Sounds like something that would happen in Darfur or Colombia or perhaps Afghanistan?
This is what is happening at the New Mexico border just south of Sunland Park in the little Mexican settlement of Lomas del Poleo. The community sits directly in the path of a planned half million person bi-national development jointly promoted by State and Federal agencies on both sides of the border, as well as large business interests. The same private interests that are relying on US & Mexican government support for infrastructure for this huge project have decided it’s cheaper to intimidate folks out of their homes rather than acquire the land legally. Allowing such lawlessness to continue ultimately endangers all of us.
Support the residents of Lomas del Poleo. When we demonstrate concern and respect for all in our community, we are that much safer from future abuses on both sides of the border.
