Professor: Stunned at Gallagher Accusations

December 2, 2008

Dear Editor:

As one of the organizers of the champagne brunch held at the home of Regent Laura Conniff, I am completely stunned at the charges made by Regent Bob Gallagher that this event amounted to “a private coronation” of interim president Dr. Waded Cruzado and thereby ruined the search for a new NMSU president. In fact, the brunch was a celebration of women’s achievements and empowerment. We started planning the event in late July, just after we heard that Dr. Cruzado would become interim president in August.  No woman before has attained such a high position at NMSU.  Her appointment broke one of the last major glass ceilings at the university, a symbolic achievement that we felt should be recognized. As event organizers, we broadened the celebration to include and honor all women we could think of who had achieved leadership positions at NMSU and in the community, and all men who had helped along the way.  It was in this context that Regent Conniff generously offered her home.

There was no connection with the search; in fact, due to the secrecy of the search process, most of us did not even realize that candidates were scheduled to be coming to campus soon afterward.  There was no hidden agenda.  This was a glorious celebration that the glass ceiling at NMSU had broken for all of us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Nancy V. Baker
