Shalom, Israel and Palestine
January 2, 2009
We, citizens of the world, are praying for all the people of the war region and want lasting solutions to the problems. This fighting has gone on too long. I’m making a suggestion to aid the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip and help them become less dependent on Israel. We need drastic changes to stop the mayhem and must involve use of Gaza’s nearby coastal waters.
Ocean liners could be anchored in the Mediterranean Sea to provide floating schools, a floating hospital, a floating food-processing plant, maybe, floating maquiladoras to give Palestinians employment. Retired battle ships could also be put to use here for humane purposes.
Oil companies are good at building platforms out in the water. Housing might be built there. Arab Nations and many other entities could invest money to make this work. The billions earmarked for war and destruction could be better-used in truly helping the area.
The main idea is to provide some space for Palestinians, productive growth and more peace for the region. Surely, great minds, great leaders, can take this idea further.
Sincerely,
Grace Hans Pawol, Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA

Thank you for your thoughts, Ms. Pawol. I have been keeping up with Middle East affairs for many years, and was there in 2008.
Sadly, the leadership of the Palestinians during the British Mandate and to the present day has been nothing but a succession of outright criminals and incompetents, culminating in the horrors we see in Gaza, in which Hamas uses civilians as shields as it pursues its terrorism, orchestrated by Iran.
As Israelis left Gaza, the extensive network of greenhouses (left behind by Israel in the hope that employed Gazans would learn peaceful living), complete with contracts to supply flowers and vegetables to Europe, were destroyed for scrap metal and a lust for sheer destruction by Gazans. Sad. Best wishes, Dan Townsend
