Border Wall photographic exhibit opens this week at Southwest Environmental Center
June 16, 2009
SWEC members are invited to reception this Friday, June 19
You won’t want to miss this exhibit! A collection of stunning photographs documenting life in the borderlands between the U.S. and Mexico goes on display June 17 at the Cottonwood Gallery in the Southwest Environmental Center. On loan from the International League of Conservation Photographers, the 30 photograph exhibit entitled Continental Divide: Borderlands, Wildlife, People and the WALL, shows the diversity of wildlife, cultures and communities that exists in the fragile borderlands, but is now jeopardized by the 630 miles of pedestrian and vehicle fencing dividing the U.S. from Mexico. The exhibit is cosponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies at New Mexico State University, and City of Artists Promotional Association. It will be on display until July 15. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday, June 19, 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Cottonwood Gallery, with invited guest speakers. More information about the exhibit can be found at http://www.ilcp.com/?cid=188.
12th Annual Raft the Rio a huge success!
The sun was hot, the river was full, and a record breaking 170 boats–mostly homemade out of discarded materials–and hundreds of sailors floated down the Rio Grande last Saturday as part of the Southwest Environmental Center’s 12th annual Raft the Rio race and festival. Thanks to everyone who participated, and to all of our volunteers, sponsors and prize contributors who made the event a success. We will post photos to our website as soon as we have them. In the meantime, you can see photos from previous years at http://kenstinnettphoto.smugmug.com/SWEC (photographer Ken Stinnett) and at http://picasaweb.google.com/RaftRio2008 (photographer Shawn Salley). Mark your calendars for next year. The 13th annual Raft the Rio will probably be held June 12 or 19.
