At sunset on Wednesday a substantial number of concerned citizens marched down luminaria-lined walkways in Veteran’s Park to gather solemnly in support of health-care reform legislation.

Bearing candles under the banners of “Shining Light on the Public Option” and “We Can’t Afford to Wait,” local members of MoveOn and other civic organizations expressed their compassion for the millions of Americans deprived by our broken health care system of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Ceremonies hosted by Joanne Ferrary began with a playback of the recorded words of the late Senator Edward Kennedy–calling eloquently for an affordable national system of universal health care now.

Melanie Goodman, from the office of Senator Jeff Bingaman, next assured the gathering of Senator Bingaman’s commitment to bringing to pass needed reform legislation.

The evening concluded with vigil participants’ reading aloud heart-wrenching real-life stories of the physical, spiritual, and financial distress of people unable to afford medical attention or obtain health insurance because of unemployment, pre-existing conditions, and debilitating illnesses.
