Please join us as we welcome New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson in celebrating the winners in the Southwest Environmental Center’s Mexican Wolf art and essay contests for middle school students. The event will be held at the Rio Grande Theater in downtown Las Cruces on Saturday, November 21, 1-2 pm. Doors open at 12:30. More than 400 students from throughout southwest New Mexico entered the contests. Prizes will be awarded for first place, second, and honorable mention, and will include an iPod Touch, a signed Robert Bateman print <http://www.millpond.com/site/viewprint.cfm?ID=324&offset=1> (out of print), signed copies of Barry Lopez’ Of Wolves and Men, a wolf country trip with Steel Horse Tours <http://www.steelhorse.biz/> , and more. All students who entered the contests will also be eligible to win a variety of prizes in a random drawing. The event will also feature a short film about wolves and a howling contest. A reception will follow at the Southwest Environmental Center from 2-3 pm. The event is free and open to the public—we hope you’ll join us. Cosponsored by the Las Cruces Museum of Natural History.
Karaoke and Howling at the Farmers’ Market
Everyone is also invited to stop by the Southwest Environmental Center for a few special activities prior to the Awards Ceremony starting at 11 am, including a sneak preview of student artwork in the Cottonwood Gallery, an under-21 karaoke contest at the Farmers’ Market in front of the Center (sponsored by Magic 105 FM–the winner will receive tickets to the Kelly Clarkson contest at the Pan Am Center on December 3), a live remote radio broadcast, and a wolf howling contest. Global Warming Lecture—Wednesday, Nov. 11, 7 PM
What is the greenhouse effect? Is it happening, and are humans responsible? And why should we care? Dr. Thomas Schmugge will address these and other questions in a public lecture entitled The Discovery and Physical Basis for Global Warming. The event will take place tomorrow, November 11, at 7 PM in the auditorium of Physical Science Laboratory in Anderson Hall on the NMSU main campus in Las Cruces. Dr. Schmugge has worked for NASA and the USDA Agriculture Research Service, and occupied the Gerald Thomas Chair of Natural Resources in the College of Agriculture at NMSU from 2005 to 2008. All members and fans of the Southwest Environmental Center are invited to a special Member Appreciation Reception to be held at the Southwest Environmental Center on Thursday, Nov. 19, 5:30 to 7 pm. Recycle your old electronic equipment—Saturday, Nov. 14
In honor of America Recycles Day, the South Central Recycling Partnership (SCRaP) is holding a first time ever ELECTRONICS RECYCLING EVENT this Saturday, November 14, from 9am-3pm at the Dona Ana County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Blvd. in Las Cruces. Please bring your working and non-working electronic recyclables – including computers, laptops, monitors, printers, televisions, fax machines, cell phones – almost anything electronic. These items are full of precious metals that can be used again. Electronics also contain toxic metals we don’t want in our landfill. Sorry, no batteries.
