Star on the Mountain Will Commemorate World Day of Cities for Life
November 20, 2009
El Pasoans Against the Death Penalty will light the Star on Mount Franklin on Monday, November 30, to affirm their participation in the World Day of Cities for Life, a worldwide action promoting abolition of the death penalty.
The date of the action is Nov. 30 each year because it was on Nov. 30, 1786, that a tiny country, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, became the first country in Europe to abolish the death penalty. Cities for Life was originated in Italy by the community of Sant’Egidio. It is supported by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty and is observed in many cities around the world.
