New Mexico Business and Labor Communities Call for Action on Climate Change
December 4, 2009
A group of New Mexico businesses and labor unions released a letter today urging world leaders and Congress to take action on climate change and invest in clean energy. The letter called for aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets and long-term incentives that provide stability to clean technology businesses.
To be delivered to Senator Bingaman and Udall next week, the letter represents a diverse group of nearly 1,400 businesses and organizations, and 26 labor unions from across the state – including the New Mexico Solar Energy Association, Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association, New Voice of Business, and the New Mexico Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.
“This letter reaffirms the growing concern for the consequences of climate change in New Mexico and a willingness on the part of New Mexico’s business and labor communities to take the first steps forward to expand our clean energy economy and move towards long-term sustainability for our economy and our environment alike,” said Peter Page of Southwest Solar Products. “We urge Senators Bingaman and Udall to move forward with strong clean energy and climate legislation as soon as possible.”
“As builders, our members are active in the application and evolving awareness of environmental responsibility, green building and energy saving practices,” stated Faren Dancer, President of the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association. “With the right incentives, New Mexico has the potential to lead the nation in the transition to a greener economy.”
The release of the letter coincides with the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, where world leaders will convene early next week to discuss international climate change policy. Mark Giorgetti of AMENERGY, LLC in Santa Fe who spearheaded the letter, will be attending the conference on behalf of the New Mexico business community.
“Copenhagen represents a pivotal opportunity for the business community. Not only is clean energy investment a job creator and a long lasting economic stimulator, but it is the necessary next step in addressing the challenge of global warming,” said Mark, “President Obama and the U.S. Congress must now take the next step by working to forge a strong agreement to address global warming during the international negotiations in Copenhagen.”
