Death threat at Lomas del Poleo

February 3, 2010

Dear Friends of Lomas del Poleo:
The following is a rough translation from the Foro Lomas del Poleo of their latest Update:

Sincerely,

Fr. Bill Morton, SSC

Today, Tuesday, at 9:30 AM, Catarino Del Rio Camacho (employee of Pedro Zaragoza) appeared at the home of a Lomas del Poleo companion and threatened with death D. Alfredo Piñon Valenzuela.

Accompanied by 7 guards who were on horseback and armed with pistols, Catarino Del Rio said to D. Alfredo: “You leave or we’ll carry you out dead; these are my lands…”

Alfredo Piñon was house-sitting for Adelaida y Vicente Estrada.  Adelaida was shot on Dec. 4 and is still recuperating.  The residents of Lomas del Poleo are carrying on various court cases in their fight for their land.  Today in Lomas only 17 families remain from the original 256.

Pedro Zaragoza in complicity with the city and state government has by force evicted more than 150 families from Lomas and has hounded other families into “negotiating” out of exhaustion and fear.

Despite all the demands for legal intervention for the crimes of murder, beatings, threats, kidnapping, demolition of homes…nothing has been investigated, the government and police being complicit with Pedro Zaragoza through his employees.

Friends, please circulate this information and be aware of the current situation in Lomas del Poleo.
