Baby Brianna still being abused
September 5, 2010
Dear Editor,
Why does Susana Martinez keep running her political campaign by bringing up over and over the tragic Baby Brianna issue?
I personally find it morally repugnant to have that long dead, defenseless baby, who was unloved and treated brutally in life, now being blatantly exploited as a mere “vote getter”.
Martinez brags the Baby Brianna bill resulted from three years of effort on her part. Actually Senate Bill, 166 better known as the Baby Brianna bill, was introduced by Senator Mary Jane Garcia who worked tirelessly to get it passed. Also the Board of County Commissioner and the Las Cruces City Council had passed resolutions in support of the proposed bill. A volunteer Task Force, under the leadership of Patsy Duran at the Community Foundation, had been set up to make the public even more aware of the urgent need for its passage.
Martinez turns a blind eye to many others who actively supported the bill.
The outrage and negative publicity from the opponents of the bill did not deter the concerned citizens whose hearts had gone out to the young victims of extreme physical and emotional abuse. The law in effect at the time fell short of the punishment such abusers deserved.
Is the Baby Brianna story the only case Martinez has to brag about? Does the rest of her many years’ record as District Attorney adds up to such a low conviction rate that she can’t risk bringing it out into the open?
