CURANDEROS REVIVE LOST TRADITION AT TRADITIONAL MEXICAN HEALTH FAIRS AND WORKSHOPS

A series of traditional Mexican health fairs Ferias de Salud and free workshops will be held in the Albuquerque area, July 26-28 in conjunction with 11th annual Traditional Medicine without Borders: Curanderismo in the Southwest and Mexico class at the University of New Mexico. The class is held July18-29 on the UNM campus. Below are the specific dates and locations for the health fairs:

Tuesday, July 26 UNM Traditional Mexican Health Fair ~ Feria de Salud Sponsored by the UNM Women’s Resource Center Noon – 2:30 p. m. Outside of the SUB north entrance

FREE WORKSHOPS noon-1:30 p. m. Renowned Mexican folk healers, curanderos (as), from the Mexico City area will speak in the Student Union Building, Lobo A & B rooms on the 3rd floor. Talks will be interpreted.

o 12 to 12:15 p. m. Eliminating negative energy and healing yourself through laughter Risa Terapia ~ Rita Navarrete o 12:15 to 12:30 p. m. Spiritual Energy Cleansings Limpias Espirtuales ~Laurencio Lopez and Velia Herrera o 12:30 to 12:45 p. m. Using Cooking herbs for Healing ~ Doris Ortiz, Maria Elena Ayala and Cecilia Martinez Howard

Thursday, July 28 Traditional Mexican Health Fair ~ Feria de Salud Performances by Traditional Aztec Dancers – Circulo Solar Ollin Xochipilli 5-10 p. m. National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 4th Street SW, courtyard between Salon Ortega and La Fonda Restaurant)

FREE WORKSHOPS 6-7:30 p. m. National Hispanic Cultural Center Renowned Mexican Folk Healers Curanderos (as) from the Mexico City Area will speak in the Wells Fargo Auditorium. The health fairs and workshops, sponsored by the UNM Women’s Resource Center, in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and La Plazita Institute will feature some 30 well-known Mexican folk healers/curanderos(as) from several Mexican communities around the Mexico City area, including Cuernavaca, Morelos and Oaxaca.

The workshops feature topics including: healing through laughter (Risa Terapia) ; spiritual energy cleansings (limpias espirtuales) ; and using cooking herbs for healing.

“The healers will discuss traditional healing therapies including herbal medications, spiritual cleansings and other healing techniques, which have remained a part of the Mexican culture for centuries,” said Dr. Eliseo “Cheo” Torres, instructor for the class.
