Dec 4 Bill Soules: “How Research and Data are Misused in Education”
I will talk about the “proofiness” of educational research and how bad research and data are being used to drive education. We need a new breed of administrators who know the difference between scientifically sound research and opinion. Education research has suffered from a fear and misunderstanding of numbers and scientific method to study teaching, learning, and education. Actual examples of bad research will be presented along with some examples of longstanding learning practices that seem to be ignored. This topic should provoke some lively discussion about the direction education is taking and what we might do about it.
Dec 11 Dale Robison: AMERIKAN FASCISM?
Are there similarities between the Weimar Republic and today’s United States? In the 1930s Germany was economically staggering under war debts, defeated in war, politically dysfunctional and in need of a national savior. They found Hitler.
James Luther Adams, the late great UU ethicist a generation ago, told his students at both the Harvard Divinity School and the University of Chicago Divinity School that if Fascism came to America it would come with a Cross wrapped in an American flag.
Movie recommendation: See “Cabaret” again.
Dec 18 Bernadine Dallago: The Child Crisis Center of Southern New Mexico
The Child Crisis Center at Community of Hope performs a very valuable service in our community. Children are referred to the Center by social services, police or parents who are in crisis. Children range in age from newborn to 11, and may live at the center for 24 hours or up to 30 days. Immigration status is not an issue. The Center is a non-profit agency and is not a part of Child Protective Services..
Bernadine Dallago is the Coordinator for the Child Crisis Center. The Center is in need of volunteers to work with staff and the children. Center staff and volunteers are carefully screened and trained to insure that the children get the best of care.
Dec 25 No Roundtable – It’s Christmas!!!
