SWEC: Good news for lobos

February 7, 2012

Mexican wolf numbers are up, but extinction still looms

The 2011 annual census of Mexican wolves was released last week, and the numbers revealed a slight increase from the previous year. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) reported it found 58 wolves and six breeding pairs, up from 50 wolves and two breeding pairs at the end of 2010. While the results were encouraging, SWEC remains concerned about the long-term viability of the population, and renewed calls on FWS to take immediate action to remove bureaucratic barriers to releasing more wolves into the wild. Survival in the Wild

The next in SWEC’s monthly “Tuesday Talks” series examining conservation topics in the Southwest will be a presentation on Wednesday, 2/15, 6 pm by Dr. Gary Roemer, NMSU conservation biologist, about the challenges to survival faced by grey foxes on California’s channel islands (predation by golden eagles), and prairie dogs (drought) and kangaroo rats (climate change) in southern New Mexico. Stay tuned for more details.

A puzzle just for fun

Here at the Southwest Environmental Center, when we’re not venting about the new Liam Neeson movie The Grey featuring ridiculous killer animatronic wolves,  we like to take a break and try our hand at brainteasers, like this one (we’ll provide the answer in the next eNews):  Name two common seven-letter uncapitalized English words that end in A-N-G.
