Senate has right approach on driver’s licenses
February 14, 2012
The New Mexico Senate did the right thing regarding driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants have been treated with so much disrespect in recent years. New Mexico should be the leader in fostering a compassionate policy regarding illegal immigration since Congress has failed totally to pass comprehensive immigration legislation. Our New Mexican bishops have rightly stated that our illegal immigration policies should be “influenced by a sense of justice and mercy” and not by intolerance.
I think that our political leaders who rant and rage against driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants should remember the words of President John F. Kennedy in his superb essay, “A Nation of Immigrants”:
“Immigration policy should be
generous; it should be fair; it should
be flexible. With such a policy we
can turn to the world, and to our own
past, with clean hands and a clear
conscience.”
This should be the American and the New Mexican ideal!
