Bill to prohibit animal-killing contests introduced in Santa Fe

Yes, cheap that’s right—animal-killing contests! Vile events in which participants compete to see who can kill the most coyotes, bobcats, prairie dogs, etc. They are currently legal in New Mexico but hopefully not for long. Rep. Nate Cote has introduced a bill (HB316) in the NM Legislature that would make it illegal to organize, sponsor or participate in competitions where the objective is to kill animals (excluding fish).

We need your help to get this bill passed!

Rally against wildlife killing contests planned for Las Cruces

Please make plans to join us at a rally against wildlife killing contests on Saturday, February 9th, 1 to 3 pm, at the Farm and Ranch Museum in Las Cruces. The event is timed to coincide with the annual “convention and hunt” of Predator Masters, a Utah-based group that promotes recreational predator hunting. The group’s annual gathering draws individuals from all over the country for three days of coyote hunting, followed by socializing each evening.

Back by Noons are coming!

Get ready for an exciting new lineup of Back by Noon guided Saturday morning natural history outings starting in February. We’re still putting together the schedule, but the Spring Series will include trips to see WWII era bombing targets, a seldom visited cave occupied by Native Americans in the Robledo Mountains, Kilbourne Hole, Otero Mesa, and more. Stay tuned!

Hydrologist Needed

SWEC is looking for a hydrologist who can help us design a system to measure the flow of water from the river to our La Mancha Wetland Project. If you can help, please call Kevin at (575) 522-5552.

SWEC at the LC Farmers Market

We are ramping up our efforts to get more Mexican wolves released into the wild before the subspecies suffers an irreversible loss of genetic diversity. As part of that effort, Field Organizer Patricia Snyder will be at the Las Cruces Farmers Market on Saturdays collecting signatures and asking people to make cell phone calls to our U.S. Senators. Stop by and visit us!
