Legislative Committee to Consider Bill to end trapping in NM—calls and emails needed

February 28, 2013

A bill to ban leghold trapping, online snaring and poisoning of wildlife in New Mexico is scheduled for a hearing in the House Energy and Natural Resources Committee tomorrow morning (Friday, pharmacy 3/1).

Introduced by Rep. Bobby Gonzalez (Taos), HB579 would put an end to trapping of wildlife on public and private lands, with a number of exceptions, including scientific research, protection of human health and safety, beaver control, protection of endangered species, protection of crops and livestock on private land, and the control of rodent pests, wild birds, and fish. SWEC supports this bill, with two changes.

If you live in NM, please take a moment to call or email your representative and voice your support for HB579.

Bill to Ban Coyote Killing Contests Fails in House

After a two hour debate, a bill sponsored by Rep. Nate Cote (D-Organ) to ban coyote-killing contests  in NM was defeated on the NM House floor by a 38-30 vote. All House Republicans and a handful of Democrats (including Rep. Mary Helen Garcia from Dona Ana County and Rudy Martinez from Grant County) voted against HB316. The bill was opposed by NM Department of Game and Fish director Jim Lane.

Please take a moment to thank your representative if he/she voted for HB316, including Nate Cote, Jeff Steinborn, Bill McCamley, Doreen Gallegos, and Phil Archuleta from Dona Ana County. Rep. Terry McMillan (R-Las Cruces) was absent during the voting.
