‘Baby Shower’ at ICE to call for an end to immigrant detention centers

August 31, 2016

The recently opened ICE Field Office is on federal property; as such, we are not legally allowed to be there. Given that, we will gather at 11am at the Department of Homeland Security Office at 1545 Hawkins Blvd #167, El Paso, TX 79925, and then proceed to the El Paso Processing Center (Immigrant Detention Facilities) at 8915 Montana Ave, El Paso, TX 79925.

For those unable to join us Friday but wanting to participate in this important event, we encourage you to host a card signing party, to write baby shower cards to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, calling on him to end family detention!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to write or call; (915) 872-8400. Thank you,

Please join Hope Border Institute, Detained Migrant Solidarity Committee,
CAFe New Mexico, Border Peace Presence, Pax Christi, and faith-based
advocates and community members at a “baby shower
mp;notif_id=1472249589785712> ” for ICE El Paso.

At this symbolic event, we will call for an end to family detention and
family separation in immigrant detention centers across the U.S.

This action is part of a larger movement to deliver these baby showers to
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Field Offices, local jails
and detention centers across the country to draw attention to the scandalous
practice by ICE of incarcerating children and mothers fleeing violence in
their home countries. In El Paso, children are not formally detained, but
rather, women and men are held at the El Paso Processing Center, and thus
systematically separated from their children. We call to put an end to this
cruel separation and hope this event is an opportunity to educate the public
about family detention processes and touch the hearts of families in El Paso
who have never had to be separated because of the United States’ immigration
detention practices.

Please join us at 11am on Friday, September 2nd at the ICE El Paso Field
Office (11541 Montana Ave, El Paso, TX 79936). If you are able, please
bring “baby shower” balloons, wrapped gift boxes, or other “baby shower” type
accouterments, and/or brightly colored posters (some ideas:
<https://www.facebook.com/groups/diapersindetention/> : “babies don’t belong
behind bars,” “no more baby jails,” “no more diapers in detention,” “end ICE
family separation,” “end child detention”).

This will be a pacific, peaceful demonstration which we hope will draw?media
and public attention?to the issue of family detention and family

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the Hope
Border Institute. We hope to see you Friday!

In solidarity,
Tedde & the Hope Border team
