SWEC: Time running out to pass coyote bill

March 13, 2017

Help us get this coyote bill passed, once and for all

This is the last week of the New Mexico legislative session, and the bill to ban coyote killing contests (SB268) is still alive! This is the best chance we’ve had in six years. A hearing is scheduled in the House Judiciary Committee tomorrow (3/14, 8 am). If the bill passes, it then goes to the House floor. The Senate already approved it by a 24-15 bipartisan vote. If it doesn’t pass this week, we have to wait another two years to try again.

If you live in New Mexico, PLEASE call your representative tonight or tomorrow and tell them to vote YES on SB 268. If you live in southwest New Mexico, calls to Reps. Bill Gomez (505-986-4341) and Rudy Martinez (505-986-4248) are especially important, so please call if you are in their districts. Find your representative’s information by clicking here. If you possibly can, please attend the Judiciary Committee meeting tomorrow morning at 8 am in Room 307 at the Roundhouse. Thank you!

March means…snakes!

Herpetologist and snake whisperer Frank Bryce will give a talk  at the Southwest Environmental Center tomorrow (March 14) at 7 pm, about the reptiles we share the desert with, how to identify the most common species of rattlesnakes, and what to do if you find one on your porch. He’ll even bring in a few “pets” (in cages) to help with identification (including a Gila monster). Come early to get a seat. For more information call 575-522-5552.

It’s Prius raffle time again

SWEC is once again raffling off a brand new, super fuel-efficient 2017 Toyota Prius C. This is one of our big fundraisers of the year, generating essential funding for our work to protect wildlife and habitats in the Southwest. As in the past, we are only selling 500 tickets maximum, at $100 each. Drawing will be held on April 22nd at the Las Cruces Earth Day Event. You do not need to be present to win. Click here for more info and to buy your ticket now.
