SWEC: Celebrate Earth Day

April 18, 2017

Celebrate Earth Day in Las Cruces!

Every trip our planet makes around the Sun is extraordinary, but this Saturday, we get a chance to officially celebrate. It’s Earth Day, April 22, and NMSU Oasis and the City of Las Cruces Sustainability Office have planned a “party with a purpose,” from 8:30 am to 3 pm in the Plaza de Las Cruces. Come out for free entertainment, music, and fun, including local food vendors, eco-arts, tree adoption, and more!

And make sure to stick around until 2pm, when SWEC will draw the winning ticket of our annual Prius raffle. (We’re only selliing 500 tickets max. As of today, we’ve only sold 350 tickets, but the drawing will happen regardless. Can you say “great odds!”)

Las Cruces Science March—4/22

For those of you in the Las Cruces area, there’s a chance to stand up for “non-alternative” facts this Saturday. Join the March for Science, April 22, 10am at the downtown plaza. Hear from local experts, including SWEC executive director Kevin Bixby, and stick around for the “Ask a Scientist” table. Free t-shirts will be given away. RSVP on Facebook by clicking here.

YCC Crew Leads La Mancha Bioblitz

More than 50 volunteers came out last Saturday morning to plant trees and identify as many species of plants and animals as possible at the SWEC’s La Mancha Wetland. The event was organized by SWEC’s 5-member Youth Conservation Corps, under the direction of Chris Schaefer, and SWEC intern Victoria Reiners. The crew has been working to restore habitat at La Mancha since February. Among Saturday’s highlights? More than 36 species of birds were seen. Read article in Las Cruce Sun-News.

Climate Change Talk at SWEC

Dr. Patricia Hoffman, professor of sociology at New Mexico State University, will present Al Gore’s climate change slideshow at SWEC on Tuesday, April 25, at 7pm. This is the famous slideshow that the former Vice President turned into the movie that launched the modern climate movement, An Inconvenient Truth, and he has been training people to deliver it for decades. Dr. Hoffman will give the slideshow presentation as part of SWEC’s Tuesday Talk series. Click here for more info.

Climate Change Reroutes Entire River

The first recorded case of “river piracy” in the modern era, as reported in Ecowatch. “And more troubling for the scientists is that a phenomenon that they would expect to happen over hundreds of years occurred in a matter of days.”
