NM faith leaders voice support for Mexican wolves at blessing event

SWEC joined with faith leaders this week at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in downtown Santa Fe to celebrate the Feast Day of St. Francis, which traditionally includes a blessing of the animals. But the animals to be blessed were not the usual dogs, cats, and other household pets. The group gathered this year to bless two wolves, in an inter-faith show of support for Mexican gray wolf recovery. Read more here.

Agencies still plan to eliminate state park in southern NM

The New Mexico State Parks Division seems determined to go ahead with its plan to eliminate the Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park and transfer management to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. The agencies are holding a public meeting next Tuesday, Oct. 10, 6-8 pm at the park to “answer questions and showcase some of the benefits” of the transfer. State Parks says it doesn’t have enough money to keep the park open. However, SWEC, which led the effort to create the park, and state legislators, including several who sponsored legislation to get the park established, have criticized the agencies for not consulting more with the local community or the Legislature, and questioned the legality of one state agency transferring property to another agency without legislative approval. If you live in the area, please plan to attend this meeting and oppose any move to eliminate this jewel of a state park.

How would you spend $10 billion?

The House Homeland Security Committee approved Wednesday a border security bill that includes $10 billion for a border wall. (That’s BILLION, with a B!) The Border Security for America Act, proposed by committee Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), was passed along party lines, 18-12. The bill nows go to the House floor.  Click here for a creative way you can use social media to oppose this colossal waste of money.
