The Extraordinary Biodiversity of Otero Mesa

Join us for a Tuesday Talk at SWEC on October 24, at 7 pm by biologist Steve West on the extraordinary biodiversity of New Mexico’s Otero Mesa. Learn why SWEC and other groups have been fighting so hard to protect this special and threatened place. Steve is a 4th generation New Mexican and career science teacher who has written a book and published articles on Chihuahuan Desert plants and animals. Free and open to the public. No Walls in the Wild–10/28

Join us for a Back by Noon outing to see the existing border wall along the U.S./Mexico border. At 18 feet high and constructed of steel bollards, the wall has to be seen to be believed. New prototypes being built are nearly twice as high! SWEC’s executive director Kevin Bixby will explain why the wall is devastating to wildlife, and talk about efforts to stop further construction. Learn more about the wall here. To sign up for this easy outing, contact (575) 522-5552 or ashley@wildmesquite.org.

A Wild Success!

Our annual A Wild Night for Wildlife gala fundraiser held last Saturday was a huge success. More than 300 people came out on an absolutely gorgeous autumn evening to enjoy great food, drinks, music and company on the beautiful downtown Las Cruces plaza. Thanks to everyone who attended and helped us meet our fundraising goals. And of course, thanks again to our sponsors, silent auction donors, and legion of volunteers. Click here to see photos of the event. And for those who attended, watch your inbox for an anonymous survey. We’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
