November 2017 Roundtable Discussion Group Schedule

The Roundtable Discussion Group meets from 10:30 to 11:30 AM every Sunday in the Library of the Unitarian Church located at 2000 S. Solano, Las Cruces NM. Education never ends. Nov. 5: Kim Seifert, Department Chair, Business Dept. DACC, “Role of Community Colleges in Creating Opportunities” A discussion of the concept and role of community colleges with a brief history of Doña Ana Community College (DACC).  Facts and figures about DACC; who we are, what we do, where we are going.  A brief discussion of the college’s role in workforce and economic development.  An explanation of the Aggie Pathway program will be presented. 
Nov. 12: Jon Hunner, History Professor at NMSU, “Driven by History: A Road trip through our National ParksLast March Jon spoke to us about what he learned from our nation’s past in his 20,000-mile tour of our National Parks. This time he will discuss Native Americans and the National Park Service
Nov. 19: Walter Rubel, Editorial page Editor of the L.C. Sun-News. “Consumers of News need to get more Demanding Again” Traditional news outlets have some form of oversight by industry standards and FCC to present fair and accurate information. Facebook and Twitter have none, as was evident in the 2016 election. We need to move beyond that history and develop some new norms for these new social media outlets—as they affect the integrity of our democracy.
Nov. 26:  Paul O’Connell, Ph.D. Economist, “Trump/Republican Tax Proposals Cannot be Justified Based on analysis of several Economists & Financial experts the benefits will primarily go to the super rich, will not grow the economy and will increase the debt. Will discuss the arguments against these tax proposals.
