Giving Tuesday, Nov. 28

November 26, 2017

You have heard of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.  Those are all days for buying THINGS.  But Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to spend your money buying justice in our community and in the world.

Below are MY suggestions for local organizations that very much would welcome your donations.

My suggestions for Giving Tuesday (all local organizations):

Las Cruces CIVIC (Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement) – All volunteer organization, but money is used to give people in detention funds for phone calls, food to supplement their meager diet, and books to take their mind away from the boredom of being locked up for months on end.  Tax-deductible donations may be made by check payable to UU Church (with CIVIC in the memo line) and mailed to UU Church, PO Box 7749, Las Cruces 88006 or online at http://www.uuchurchlc.org/ and click on “give” in the upper, right-hand corner.

Las Cruces Coalition for Reproductive Justice has a special fund to be used for people in need to be able to access reproductive health services including contraceptives and abortion.  Donations may be made online at https://www.lccrj.com/ or mail a check to LCCRJ at 210 W. They work to protect and restore vital habitats, like Otero Mesa and Rio Grande, and endangered species, like the Mexican gray wolf. Established in Las Cruces in 1992, they’ve had 25 years of success, and couldn’t do it without our members.  Donate online at www.wildmesquite.org or mail check to SWEC at 275 N Downtown Mall, Las Cruces, 88001.

PFLAG Las Cruces (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays – old name, expanded focus) — PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.  Checks to PFLAG Las Cruces may be mailed to 2705 Huntington Dr., Las Cruces 88011.

Casa de Peregrinos — The mission of Casa de Peregrinos is to alleviate hunger in our community through the acquisition and distribution of nutritious food.  CdeP is an emergency food pantry located in Las Cruces and with satellite locations throughout Dona Ana county.  Donate online at https://www.casadeperegrinos.org/home/donate_funds or mail a check to Casa de Peregrinos, 999 W.
